brightness, and temperature fluctuate
in a predictable pattern. Most variable
stars fall into one of two broad
categories: (1) pulsating stars, whose
atmospheres actually expand and
contract, and (2) cataclysmic
variables, which undergo sudden,
dramatic changes like novae and
supernovae.
